Since 2002, the Big Pilot’s Watch has been IWC’s flagship. Its IWC-manufactured 51110 movement contains all the features that have proved their worth in the long history of IWC mechanical watches. Within no time at all, the automatic movement – currently the largest of its kind in the world – generates a power reserve of 8.5 days, but only runs for seven before an ingenious little mechanism automatically stops it. This is because the torque that drives the movement decreases as the mainspring winds down, leading to a loss of amplitude in the balance and possible inaccuracy. The screw balance, with its Breguet spring and fine-adjustment cams, is taken from the Mark 11 and has passed all its endurance tests as a “navigator’s wrist watch” with flying colours. The giant among the pilot’s watches embarked upon 2006 with a number of slight modifications, and is now available either in white gold with a slate grey “ardoise” dial or in stainless steel with a black dial, as well as a crocodile leather strap in black or dark brown. The shapes of the hands and the dial designs have been modified to match those of the other models in the series. All models in the Pilot’s Watch Classics collection now have the same uniform appearance. |
